There are some tools for Freenet that allow you to share the files, you want to look at Frost (works similarly to newsgroups) and Thaw. If you still have the problem with localhost:8888 on your browser it probably means that your node (A) doesn't run on local machine (not very likely if you are a newbie), (B) isn't started at the moment (start the node in the operating system way). You also will need to exchange references with some people who already use Freenet, this should be with people you trust not to spy on your communications. If you are desperate and have nobody else to exchange with you want to join #freenet-refs on Freenode IRC network. I hope this helps. - Volodya - -- http://freedom.libsyn.com/ Voice of Freedom, Radical Podcast http://freeselfdefence.info/ Self-defence wiki http://www.kingstonstudents.org/ Kingston University students' forum "None of us are free until all of us are free." ~ Mihail Bakunin -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFGNupfuWy2EFICg+0RAqJkAJ4uap3jIQILcbWCXcNZycK/QorL/ACgrpjm HpGFYA7B8VCB5UnQRwTYc/c= =vTE6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From urza9814 at gmail.com Tue May 1 10:05:22 2007 From: urza9814 at gmail.com (urza9814 at gmail.com) Date: Tue, 1 May 2007 06:05:22 -0400 Subject: [freenet-support] Newbie Reply In-Reply-To: <915772.7516.qm@web63602.mail.re1.yahoo.com> References: <915772.7516.qm@web63602.mail.re1.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <35af28770705010305m7a70186eq42b5a56b2918f8cc@mail.gmail.com> well, unless something's changed in the newer versions (I still use 0.5 for various reasons), that means freenet isn't running. I'm assuming you are running windows, so make sure the little freenet icon appears in the system tray, and if so, right click and there should be an option to view the error log. But then again, my knowledge is based off running 0.5 on XP, before 0.7 even came out, so things might be a bit different. Maybe someone else here can help you some if that's the case. Please upgrade (it should be on the auto-update system very soon, tell us if that doesn't work). The main change in 1032 is the completion of the localisation framework. What this means is that the node is now ready for the user interface to be translated. Translation keys have been added for all strings that a non-developer user is likely to see through the web interface. More strings may be added later on due to new features, and it's possible that some may be combined because they are the same, but generally speaking it is ready for translators to start work. If you want to translate Freenet into your native language, please contact us, and use the built-in functionality of your node to do it: set your language on the config page (set it to unlisted if your language isn't there already), and use the Translation page to translate strings. Then download the translation file and send us it (by any means), and we will try to include it in the next version. Also if you can review translations to see if they are reasonable that is also useful. Thanks to _ph00 and Cooo for providing (mostly but not quite complete) Italian and Swedish translations. There are also various bugfixes including in the client layer, web interface and datastore. Please upgrade. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Key has 2 parts, routing key and decryption key; only routing key is used for routing purposes. When your node requests the key it looks for the closest location within connections. Basically each key "wants" to be in a particular location. If the best choice is closer than the node that you are running than HTL is decremented, if it's worse it's restarted from the max (i think it's 10)... What this means is that unless you change the option, you cannot access freesites or SSK/USK files inserted using insecure crypto, i.e. inserted with keys generated before 1010. However, at a network level they will remain, for now, as will CHKs, for now. PLEASE migrate your freesites. If you particularly value a freesite which isn't your own, but isn't likely to be updated, migrate it yourself! You can always make clear that it's a mirror. The plan is for the next build (1035) to have allowInsecureSSKs=false, the one after it to have allowInsecureCHKs=false, and then for the code and the network-level support for insecure keys to be deleted some time later (on a scale of months probably). Code which only exists to replicate past insecurity for backwards compatibility's sake has no place in Freenet! -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... PLEASE migrate your sites and indexes. Please also migrate your favourite unmaintained freesites etc, and indicate which site you are migrating on this board or sites so as to avoid duplication of effort (unless you are having difficulty fetching it and want somebody else to try). We *will* however remove support for old keys soon - hopefully within june - so please move your content. Please upgrade. Changes include: - Fixed some deadlocks, infinite loops etc in inserting and fetching freesites. - Binary blobs: A way to download a freesite and reinsert it on another network without knowing the privkeys. Will be used soon in Update over Mandatory. - New norwegian translation, improved translations in swedish, polish, french and italian. - The node will now pick up your default language from your computer's locale on install. - Nextgens has written an initial configuration wizard on /wizard/. The installer will point to this soon. - Minor datastore improvements. - Loading pluginname# will download it from the mirrors over HTTP (insecure) and then load it (but unlike pluginname* it won't do this on every startup). In related news, nextgens has bundled a Universal Plug and Play plugin with the node. If you are behind a router, please visit the status page for this on the plugins page and tell us if it works. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
