Freenet 0.7 build 1087 is now available. This will be mandatory at 0:00 on 
Thursday, not because of any critical bugfix but because of a performance 
enhancement that we need network-wide. Please upgrade. The main changes in 
this build are:
- A significant reduction in per-hop latency found by our new developer, 
Robert Hailey. Should be around a 50% cut in per hop latency, but I don't 
expect any long term gain in throughput.
- Prevent a nasty memory/bandwidth denial of service attack: Don't let a node 
make requests faster than it accepts the data resulting from it.
- Slightly more accurate request bytes usage statistics, which should mean 
slightly more accurate load limiting.
- Don't keep old queued messages around (dump them after an explicit 
disconnect, an hour of being disconnected, etc).
- Clarifications in the first-time wizard.

Please let us know if you find any bugs, via the bug tracker, the mailing 
lists or Frost.

Freenet 0.7 build 1088 is now available. Please upgrade. The major changes in 
this build relate to opennet: We are trying to get full opennet working, so 
that Freenet will work out of the box with no need for reference exchange on 
#freenet-refs . Build 1088 includes a hopefully working announcement 
protocol, which is the second half of the bootstrapping mechanism: once a 
node has connected to a seednode (a node from a list we provide at install 
time), it does an announcement to get a bunch of nodes to connect to. After 
that, opennet path folding will keep the node busy and integrated.

Because we need to get full opennet working as soon as possible, this is 
another mandatory build (at 0:00 on Thursday). Sorry, but the end justifies 
the means in this case: Getting full opennet working (hopefully in time for 
Christmas) will greatly improve Freenet's ease of installation.

Announcement is working, including connecting to initial seednodes. We don't 
have any automated way of gathering seednodes yet. There are a couple of 
largish bugs in the deployed code which cause announcements to bounce around 
the network indefinitely; fortunately, the deployed code doesn't actually 
make announcement requests. The trunk code will out of the box announce 
itself to randomly chosen nodes in its seednodes.fref (if there is one) until 
it has 10 opennet peers (if opennet is enabled).

So, we need:
- Yet another mandatory (1089). Sorry folk.
- A list of public seednodes. If a few people with static IPs/dyndns and 
opennet would send me their noderefs, we can build a temporary seednodes.fref 
from that. In the longer term, the node will detect if you are eligible to be 
a seednode, ask if you want to be one, and if so upload regularly to a server 
on emu.
- To bundle this list with the node.

In conclusion: the end of #freenet-refs is nigh, finally!

Freenet 0.7 build 1089 is now available. Please upgrade. This will be 
mandatory 0:00 Saturday (GMT). The main changes in this build relate to 
opennet: opennet is now 95% working, if the node has no peers, has opennet 
enabled, and has a seednodes file, it will try to connect to randomly chosen 
seednodes and do an announcement to them. Sadly 1088 had some major bugs in 
the announcement code, so we need 1089 to be deployed as quickly as possible 
so we can test to see whether they are fixed before actually adding a 
seednodes file to the installer. But certainly within the coming week 
#freenet-refs will be no more. So please upgrade! Testing, of both this 
build, and trunk builds, would be appreciated, and please report any bugs you 
find to the bug tracker (https://bugs.freenetproject.org/ ), to the mailing 
lists or to Frost. Thanks.

I am not having very much luck getting Freenet 0.7 working as 
opennet.  I have waited 24 hours but there has been no activity shown 
on the home page. I restarted the node, the wrapper.log shown is 
shown below ( I have xed out the port numbers, xxxx for darknet and 
xxxxx for opennet). AFAICT it looks OK except for the repeats of log 
entries. I have opened the relevant ports on the router and firewall.

Is there anything I can try ?

Did you add some peers? Full opennet isn't working yet, but will be soon; at 
the moment, you still need to add some peers from #freenet-refs.

Backup your old freenet.jar and freenet-ext.jar, just in case. Unpack
the file with almost any archiver and copy the new jar files over the

Opennet is now working: you can now plug in a node and turn it on, and 
provided you enable opennet ("connect to untrusted peers") in the wizard, 
within minutes it will bootstrap itself onto the network. Note that we only 
have a few hardcoded seednode references at the moment. We will set up an 
automated harvesting system soon. Also note that we don't want a slashdot 
right now! We will release a second alpha soon, but we need to make sure 
opennet is working first, and probably get automatic seednode collection 
sorted. Hopefully we can do this within the coming weeks, but NOT TODAY!

to e.g. enabling LAN connections), and various optimisations and bugfixes.

my node seems to normally use 80% of java memory; when arriving to

I found no trivial place in run.sh to raise the java

In wrapper.conf, wrapper.java.maxmemory sets the memory limit for the node.
wrapper.java.maxmemory=200 gives a max Java memory of 198 MiB (without doing 
the math I'm guessing this is 200MB)

Freenet 0.7 build 1094 is now available. It's mandatory on Sunday. Please 
upgrade. One major focus of recent builds has been to deal with the fact that 
connections to seednodes were sending very big packets, which many firewalls 
were dropping; this build should stop that. Also, we have lots of work on CHK 
inserts by Robert, a German update, and various internal code tidying up, and 
freenet-ext.jar #18 updates the database that backs the datastore, Berkeley 
DB Java Edition (now owned by Oracle). Please report bugs as you find them to 
the bug tracker, the mailing lists, IRC and Frost. Also note that I will be 
around on Monday, but will probably take some time off after Christmas. We 
weren't able to get the second alpha out for Christmas, but we will hopefully

Sorry folks. Freenet 0.7 build 1095 is now available. The main reason for this 
build (so soon after 1094) is to fix a bug that was preventing new nodes from

Freenet 0.7 build 1096 is now available, and will be mandatory on Monday 
(sorry, we caught a BigBug...). Changes:
- CHK inserts: Fixed a major bug: We were never timing out waiting for 
completion notifications, so if a node timed out then the CHK inserter would 
continue to wait forever. So eventually the node would cease to accept 
requests because there were so many inserts running, and become useless. 
(Note that other recent changes to this code have yielded significant 
performance gains in recent builds).
- Security fix: Insert the whole file before inserting the top block of a 
splitfile. This makes some powerful attacks significantly harder if the 
attacker cannot guess the content of the file to be inserted.
- Fix some character set problems (umlauts broken on some pages, node to node 
text messages, etc).
- Fix redirect from USK at .../site/number to USK at .../site/number/ - we were 
redirecting to USK at .../site/-number which was making loading the Frost 
bookmark *really* slow.
- Don't fail to load if there is no freenet.ini. May affect ebuilds etc.
- Tidying up code, minor refactoring etc.
- Various other bugfixes.

Please upgrade! Thanks. Please report bugs to the bugtracker, IRC, Frost etc.

afterwards.

I am writing some minihowtos for linux newbies, and have also written about 
freenet.
I find the documentation on "http://freenetproject.org/documentation.html" 
very good, but also confusing about some important points, like "connect" 
and "darknet" (just two important examples).
I have freenet running (I think), but do not get much downloaded.

My point is to make a quick manual, which is made for newbies, using only 
simple everyday words and phrases.
I am only speaking on behalf of freenet NEWBIES, who want to experience/go to 
the freenet, and surf, and fetch stuff, and I have read, that most people 
only spend short time on websites, when surfing (human impatience). *humour*
I would like to make such a quick manual, but I cannot find my way to get the 
information I need.

I made a manual, and freenet took the link away, without explaining exact to 
my brain, what had to be changed/updated.
I have updated, but are unsure of what I have done.
For me, it is important to get explanations about terms, which are not evident 
to newbies.
What I can offer is the mind of a newbie, to communicate with the minds of the 
developers!
I made a manual, but would like to make it even better and easier to 
understand.

Another possibility is you to update your documentation, and remove 
unnecessary text (if needed?).

This is a friendly mail, hoping to get my problem sorted out?

Hi all,

Im running Freenet 0.7 (latest version downloaded on
December 23rd) on a Windows xp sp2 machine with an
Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz dual core with 1.5GB ram of DDR
400 and my CPU is hitting near to 100% with no other
applications running.

Checking resources shows java.exe (freenet) chewing up
80% of cpu resources.

is anyone else seeing similar issues ?

After some successfuls test insert I'im receinving an error
 message "this site cannot be inserted" without furhter
 explaination.

Jsite has a logfile somewhere? There is some kind of
 documentation other than browsing sources?

I'mrunning a Opennet node on linux Sarge with JRE 6.0
jSite insertions work if the freesite is small 10-30 files
 but fail if it is big 100+ files.

jSite opens a popup saying that some files cannot be inserted.
This happens at different percentages of work in different
 attempt for the same freesite.

The Freenet node is healty, with 384Mb of Java memory
 and 24 KBytes of upstream bandwidth.

I was unable to find logfiles of jSite or any documentation.

Someone can help?
