I have previously recommended that all nodes should drop their position 
in favor of a random selection on a regular (actually random) basis. 
That could help against this as well.

(I know the thought of nodes just dropping a good position seems 
difficult to accept, but if the algorithm works it is not a problem, and 
if it doesn't then things won't work anyways.)
