[5:17] <kobbay> hi all
[5:17] <kobbay> i need some help
[5:18] <TheSeeker> if you need help, state your problem. if nobody anwers whole you are here, check the logs later, someone may have discussed it after you left.
[5:20] <kobbay> ok, thanks for the tip ! i was waiting for answer before developing my issue
[5:21] <kobbay> i succeed to install and run freenet (./run.sh start), as i don't have somebody to exchange the refs, i turned Opennet ON
[5:21] <kobbay> i'm under the last Ubuntu
[5:22] <kobbay> but since yesterday, i cannot get any connection with other nodes
[5:22] <TheSeeker> do you ahve a seednodes.fref file?
[5:23] <kobbay> yes i have this file 11,2Kb
[5:23] <TheSeeker> In your strangers page, are there a lot of 'never conencted' or no nodes at all?
[5:24] <kobbay> i think no nodes at all
[5:24] <kobbay> (0/0/0/0/0/0)
[5:25] <kobbay> i can't see anything about 'never connected' or like that
[5:25] <kobbay> info : i'm located in China !!
[5:26] <kobbay> i had to get the offline install
[5:27] <TheSeeker> hmm, and your node is not trying to connect to seeds with opennet enabled?
[5:27] <TheSeeker> Can you ping theseeker.bounceme.net ?
[5:29] <kobbay> yes
[5:29] <kobbay> 12 packets transmitted, 10 received, 16% packet loss, time 11019ms
[5:41] <TheSeeker> Did you get my PM?
[5:50] * kobbay__ (n=kob@) has joined #freenet
[5:50] * kobbay (n=kob@) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[5:50] <kobbay__> sorry, disconnected
[5:50] * kobbay__ (n=kob@) Quit (Client Quit)
[5:51] * kobbay__ (n=kob@) has joined #freenet
[5:52] <kobbay__> sorry have been disconnected
[5:54] <kobbay__> in my wrapper.log i can find that : Result: Firewall blocks UDP or server down.
[5:54] <kobbay__> even with ports open or dmz !
[5:56] <sanity> kobbay__: I can't really help, but if TheSeeker or something else doesn't return, try joining the support mailing list if you can and asking there
[5:57] <kobbay__> ok, thank you for the info :)
[6:17] <TheSeeker> maybe the great firewall is already blocking our seeds? (seems unlikely, unless we have major attention of the Chinese gov now o.O)
[6:19] <kobbay__> oh i see, of course i had many problems to visit the website or download the files
[6:20] <kobbay__> any way to check if it's really the great firewall ?
[6:21] <kobbay__> strange thing in the log is that : Local IP address: 192.168.24.1 | it's not right, sometimes (in the log) the local ip is right some times not
[6:23] <TheSeeker> is there no note in the wrapper log about trying to connect to seeds?
[6:24] <kobbay__> like that ? --> Successful STUN discovery from stun.softjoys.com!:Network interface: wlan0
[6:25] <TheSeeker> in my startup I see:
[6:25] <TheSeeker> Announcement to 71.205.60.91:8476 starting...
[6:25] <TheSeeker> Announcement to 87.82.79.198:37024 starting...
[6:25] <TheSeeker> Announcement to 91.121.72.177:15417 starting...
[6:25] <TheSeeker> etc
[6:25] <TheSeeker> (I'm going out on a limb here assuming that seeds aren't too concerned about their IPs being in logs :P)
[6:26] <TheSeeker> can you try to tracert those IPs and see if you can reach them?
[6:29] <kobbay__> ok, i check if i can reach them
[6:29] <kobbay__> should i find these IPs in my log also ?
[6:30] <TheSeeker> if you hve opennet enabled, then you should have seen messages liek those above: Annoubcement to IP:port starting...
[6:31] <TheSeeker> have you tried restarting your node since you enabled opennet? :P
[6:31] <kobbay__> :)
[6:31] <kobbay__> more than 10 times
[6:32] <kobbay__> since yesterday
[6:32] * sanity (n=ian@) Quit ()
[6:32] <TheSeeker> and you don't see any announcement stuff in your wrapper log?

[6:38] <kobbay__> ok
[6:51] * kobbay (n=kob@) has joined #freenet
[6:55] <kobbay> i can reach ip-87-82-79-198.easynet.co.uk (87.82.79.198) 667.228 ms 669.146 ms 673.178 ms
[7:06] <TheSeeker> hmm
[7:06] <TheSeeker> whatversion of freenet are you running?
[7:07] <TheSeeker> for example. I'm runnig: Freenet 0.7 Build #1096 r16800
[7:08] <kobbay> Freenet 0.7 Build #1092 r16697
[7:08] <TheSeeker> that's your problem :)
[7:09] <kobbay> :)
[7:09] * kobbay__ (n=kob@) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[7:09] <kobbay> how to start an update ?
[7:09] <TheSeeker> run update.sh
[7:11] <kobbay> ok
[7:13] <TheSeeker> working?
[7:14] <kobbay> it seems not
[7:14] <kobbay> i can start without problem
[7:14] <kobbay> but then i have Downloading sha1test.jar utility jar which will download the actual update.
[7:14] <kobbay> repeated more times
[7:14] <TheSeeker> ah. hmm.
[7:15] <kobbay> it seems it is not downloading
[7:15] <TheSeeker> probably because it tries to get the update from the freenetproject.org server, which is likely blocked x_x
[7:16] <TheSeeker> http://theseeker.bounceme.net/freenet.jar <- latest stable
[7:16] <TheSeeker> http://theseeker.bounceme.net/freenet-ext.jar <- you'll need this too.
[7:17] <TheSeeker> download those, shut down your node, replace your node's files, then start up.. and all should work.
[7:18] <kobbay> ok, i do that ! thanks for the links ;)
[7:20] <TheSeeker> node is currently shut down while I recompile latest svn ... so the upload speed should be half-decent.
[7:20] <kobbay> i tried to use tor for the update and i get Downloading sha1test.jar utility jar which will download the actual update.
[7:20] <kobbay> Fetching update.sh
[7:20] <kobbay> seems to be updatedm, no ?
[7:21] <kobbay> i lauch and check
[7:21] <kobbay> *launch
[7:21] <TheSeeker> when you're running freenet Build #1096 you'll be up to date
[7:22] <TheSeeker> r16799
[7:23] <TheSeeker> freenet-ext Build #18 r16742
[7:25] <kobbay> i have now Freenet 0.7 Build #1092 r16697
[7:25] <kobbay> ohh it's the same !
[7:27] <TheSeeker> Well, I've restarted my node, so the upload speed will probably have dropped a bit, but you can still use those links to get the latest freenet and -ext jars.
[7:32] <kobbay> yes ! it seems to be better
[7:32] <kobbay> Freenet 0.7 Build #1096 r16799
[7:33] <kobbay> Announcement to 91.121.72.177:15417 starting...
[7:33] <kobbay> :)
[7:36] * klingon (n=gy698@) has joined #freenet
[7:39] <TheSeeker> kobbay: you have freenet-ext #18 as well?
[7:40] <kobbay> Freenet Build #1096 r16799 and freenet-ext Build #18 r16742
[7:41] <kobbay> i have been connected to 2 nodes (home panel), trying to connect 2 other nodes
[7:41] <TheSeeker> yay
[7:41] <kobbay> and then again 0 0 0 0
[7:41] <kobbay> nothing connected
[7:41] * klingon (n=gy698@) Quit ()
[7:41] <TheSeeker> strangers page says that?
[7:42] <kobbay> (0/0/0/0/0/0) Strangers (Untrusted Peers) of me
[7:43] <kobbay> i try to restart
[7:43] <TheSeeker> have you run jstun yet this launch?
[7:44] <TheSeeker> I forget if it works automagically, since I don't have to use it :P
[7:45] <kobbay> jstun ?
[7:45] <kobbay> what's that ?
[7:45] <TheSeeker> plugin for finding your external IP
[7:46] <TheSeeker> it should be on the plugins page
[7:46] <kobbay> ok
[7:46] <kobbay> yes i have it loaded plugins.JSTUN.JSTUN
[7:46] <TheSeeker> click 'visit'
[7:46] <kobbay> and in the log my public IP is correctly recognised
[7:47] <TheSeeker> that's good. any more annoucement stuff in the log (success/fail?)
[7:47] <kobbay> i confirm it is the right public IP
[7:48] <kobbay> INFO | jvm 2 | 2007/12/25 15:46:37 | Announcement to 87.82.79.198:37024 starting...

[7:48] <kobbay> but still wrong info : Local IP address: 192.168.229.1 (not every time)
[7:48] <TheSeeker> and still no opennet connections?
[7:49] <kobbay> the first time i reconnected after the update, i had 2
[7:49] <kobbay> but now nothing - still nothing
[7:49] <TheSeeker> those were probably the seednodes.
[7:50] <kobbay> ooooh
[7:50] <kobbay> 1
[7:50] <TheSeeker> 1 connected?
[7:51] <kobbay> yes :(
[7:51] <kobbay> and again nothing
[7:51] <TheSeeker> so it went from 1 to 0?
[7:52] <TheSeeker> look for ERRORs in your wrapper.log
[7:52] <kobbay> is that normal that when i see 1 or 2 connected in the HOME panel, i still have 0 0 0 0 0 0 in the strangers area ?
[7:52] <kobbay> yes from 1 to 0
[7:52] <kobbay> i check
[7:52] <TheSeeker> I don't think seednodes show up in teh strangers panel.
[7:53] <kobbay> ok
[7:53] <kobbay> i also can find a lot of : CyberGarage warning : Invalidate Multicast Recieved : /239.255.255.250,/ff02:0:0:0:0:0:0:c
[7:54] <kobbay> in my log
[7:55] <TheSeeker> paste your opennet reference into a pastebin somewhere eg http://dark-code.bulix.org/ and get my ref from theseeker.bounceme.net/TheSeekerOPEN.fref and see if we can get connected.
[7:55] <TheSeeker> (you'll get kicked if you try to paste a reference into the channel)
[7:56] <kobbay> ok
[7:57] <kobbay> it's the one with opennet = true
[7:57] <TheSeeker> yes
[7:57] <TheSeeker> on yoru strangers page
[7:57] <TheSeeker> *your
[7:57] <kobbay> ok
[8:04] <kobbay> http://pastebin.ca/831694
[8:06] * lians (i=lians@) has joined #freenet
[8:06] <TheSeeker> connected
[8:06] <kobbay> yep
[8:07] <TheSeeker> you should start getting other opennet peers through me now, I think.
[8:08] <TheSeeker> refresh your strangers page every 5 mins or so to see how it's doing..
[8:09] * kryptos23_ (n=kryptos@) has joined #freenet
[8:09] <lians> Hi, need a question answered, can i play incomplete video files that i got/am getting from freenet? and if so where are the files put while not complete
[8:10] <kobbay> ok, thx again for your help, i let you know ....
[8:13] <TheSeeker> no, you can't play incomplete files. Freenet downloads blocks in random order, with about 1/3 of them being Forward Error Correction (FEC) [mystical methematical representations of any particular missing part, so long as there's enough FEC blocks to fill the holes] which all get put together and crunched on for a while when it's finished to get the original file back...
[8:13] <lians> ya was afraid so :|
[8:13] <TheSeeker> so while it's downloading, all you have is a ton of 32k blocks, none of which are contiguous, and some of which don't even contain data belonging to the file in any recognizable fassion.
[8:14] <lians> ow well
[8:15] <TheSeeker> Using someting like FreeMulet it might be possible, and certainly other 3rd party programs can be made to explicitly allow it, but freenet is still apha, so most people can't be bothered to write that kind of thing yet :P
[8:16] <TheSeeker> FreeMulET bypasses the fec process, and *might* store the blocks downloaded for incomplete files within a single file... but I haven't really looked into that.
[8:16] * saces (n=saces@) Quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[8:16] <lians> yeah, sucks too, i mean i havent found fake files yet, and if its about videos, most of the time thats what you would want tocheck before it completes download
[8:17] <TheSeeker> This is where the concept of trust comes in...
[8:18] <lians> yeah my point exaclty :) it sucks cause its not really needed
[8:18] <TheSeeker> but that's a huge debate that I don't have time for on xmas ... merry xmas btw.
[8:18] <lians> lol , your right
[8:18] <lians> happy holydays
[8:21] * kryptos23_ (n=kryptos@) Quit ("ChatZilla 0.9.79 [Firefox 2.0.0.11/2007112718]")
[8:21] <TheSeeker> kobbay: did you get any more opennet conenctions before we got disconnected?
[8:22] <kobbay> no
[8:29] <TheSeeker> wow, did you kill the pastebin post, or do they just expire really fast?
[8:30] <kobbay> i did
[8:30] <kobbay> http://pastebin.ca/831704
[8:32] <TheSeeker> try darknet instead. since I have all the opennet conenctions I need, I think yours might have got bumped off :/ replace OPEN with DARK to get my ref.
[8:33] <TheSeeker> toad: perhaps higher durability should be given to manually added opennet connections?
[8:35] <kobbay> ok, here is mine http://pastebin.ca/831708
[8:36] * lians leaving
[8:36] <TheSeeker> got it, you cn expire the paste.
[8:36] <lians> cyas , ty for the help
[8:36] * lians (i=lians@) Quit ()
[8:37] <kobbay> ok
[8:38] <TheSeeker> ok, so, you should have me as both a darknet and opennet peer for the moment... and even if the opennet connection gets cut again, the darknet one should remain.
[8:38] <ljn1981|away> <kobbay__> like that ? --> Successful STUN discovery from stun.softjoys.com!:Network interface: wlan0 ------ I didn't think you could have wlan in China. Or is that just on cellphones? We got hardware issues on the phones at work because they screwed up this prototype version at the plant and added some parts to disable wifi as that was in the schematics for the final version.
[8:38] * jlulian38 (n=jlulian3@) Quit (Remote closed the connection)
[8:39] <TheSeeker> with any luck, you should be able to get a bunch more strangers connected
[8:39] <kobbay> ok, and i should also get new opennet connections but no darknet, just if i add some
[8:40] <TheSeeker> no, you won't get any more darknet conenctions, those always have to be added manually.
[8:40] <kobbay> no, it's not on cell phone, i home with wlan installation
[8:40] <kobbay> ok
[8:41] <TheSeeker> not sure how well freenet works with wlan ... if you have continued problems, try connecting directly to the hub. :/
[8:41] <kobbay> ok, i'll do that
[8:41] <TheSeeker> how many strangers do you ahve now kobbay?
[8:42] <kobbay> 1 = you
[8:42] <kobbay> now BACKED OFF
[8:43] <TheSeeker> oh, I misread that statment before to read that you did get new opennet connections. whoops.
[8:43] <kobbay> and re Connected
[8:45] <kobbay> in HOME i see sometimes connected to 1 or 2 nodes and then again 0
[8:49] <kobbay> disconnected again ? not normal, isn't it ?
[8:50] <kobbay> ok, i'll try with a cable connection ...
[8:55] <TheSeeker> your IP is different now than what jstun was reporting earlier. o.O
[8:57] <kobbay> sometimes in the log i have the right IP and some times i have Public IP: unknown
[8:58] <TheSeeker> I see your IP as 116.52.87.??? not 222.221.169.???
[8:59] <kobbay> yes i have disconnected and reconnected meanwhile
[8:59] <kobbay> JSTUN detection report
[8:59] <kobbay> There is no need for the plugin to determine your ip address: the node knows it.
[8:59] <TheSeeker> ah, and you get a new IP each time you reset your cable modem?
[8:59] <kobbay> yes
[9:00] <TheSeeker> yay for ARK lookups then :P
[9:00] <kobbay> ARK lookups ??
[9:02] <TheSeeker> A method of letting your peers find your new IP if you get disconnected and both of your IPs have changed.
[9:05] <TheSeeker> still no opennet peers?
[9:07] <kobbay> no and disconnected from your node
[9:08] <kobbay> opennet
[9:08] <kobbay> how should i deal with ark lookups ?
[9:10] <TheSeeker> what do you mean?
[9:11] <kobbay> you said i might need ARK lookups, no ? i can't find anything about that in freenet
[9:12] <TheSeeker> you don't need them now, but they are a useful automatic feature later when you do have more peers. ARKs (Address Resolution Keys) are looked for by your peers if they get disconnected from you and can't connect, and either their own IP has changed, or they are firewalled and can't accept incoming connections.
[9:13] <kobbay> alright
[9:18] <TheSeeker> you might need to enable the option "Relay opennet noderefs through darknet peers?"
[9:21] <kobbay> where ?
[9:21] <TheSeeker> If you don't see it, you probably need to enable advanced mode first.
[9:21] <kobbay> i'm in advanced mode already
[9:22] <kobbay> didn't find it
[9:22] <TheSeeker> it'll be betweem the input bandwidth limit, and the extra peer data directory in the Node section
[9:23] * saces (n=saces@) has joined #freenet
[9:23] <kobbay> ok, is and was on TRUE
[9:30] <TheSeeker> hrm.
[9:31] <kobbay> 1 opennet connexion i can see in strangers area, but still 0 on HOME
[9:31] <TheSeeker> HOME will only show if you are connecting to a seednode I think.
[9:31] <kobbay> i think it's not your node
[9:31] <kobbay> it's another IP
[9:32] <kobbay> with your node i now have 2 opennet et 1 darknet
[9:33] <kobbay> ah
[9:33] <TheSeeker> ah, good. then you should continue to gather opennet nodes over time.
[9:34] <kobbay> on HOME page, in section Node Announcing
[9:34] <kobbay> i have :
[9:34] <kobbay> The node is currently attempting to connect to seednodes and announce itself to the opennet (Strangers network). This may take a few minutes. We have recently sent 0 announcements, 0 of which are still running, and added 0 nodes (0 nodes have rejected us). We are currently connected to 0 seednodes and trying to connect to another 2.
[9:35] <kobbay> is this normal ?
[9:36] <kobbay> what means : # Backed off: 1 ?
[9:36] <kobbay> heey nodes a coming ... connecting !
[9:46] <TheSeeker> an announcement finally work?
[9:47] <kobbay> yes, it seems
[9:47] <kobbay> * Connected: 2
[9:47] <kobbay> * Never connected: 2
[9:47] <kobbay> what means : # Backed off ?
[9:48] <TheSeeker> backed off means that you sent a request, but they took too long to respond, so you're backing off fromt hem to give them time to be less overloaded before sending more requests
[9:49] <kobbay> ok, thx
[9:49] <TheSeeker> in the backoff column, you'll see the 0% of time that node has been backed off, as well as a fraction which is: seconds until next attempt/total seconds to be backed off
[9:50] <kobbay> ok, and if i restart my node ? what am i going to loose ? all connections ?
[9:50] <TheSeeker> if you restart your node, then your node *should* try to reconnect to everyone that it was connected to at the time of shutdown.
[9:51] <kobbay> ok
[9:51] <TheSeeker> You'll certainly be able to connect to me at least though darknet, since I'm a nearly 24/7 node.
[9:52] <kobbay> :)
[9:56] <kobbay> and i can't browse freenet until i have 3 nodes connected right ?
[9:57] <TheSeeker> I think you can, it just won't be nearly as secure
[9:58] <TheSeeker> I think you just won't route data for the one(s) you're connected to.
[9:59] <TheSeeker> how many strangers are you up to now?
[10:00] <kobbay> * Connected: 2
[10:00] <kobbay> * Backed off: 1
