[13:45] <n0ooby> help
[13:46] <n0ooby> I just installed freenet on winXP 32bit
[13:46] <n0ooby> but it won't launch
[13:46] <n0ooby> something is wrong with the startup script
[13:47] <n0ooby> would someone please post those lines one by one so I can copy-paste them?
[13:48] <n0ooby> the script I got with freenet complained about 'net' not being a recognized command, so I tried to change it to 'netstart' and 'start' but that didn't work either, and now I need to know exactly how the script is supposed to look like, or where I can download or copy it from.
[13:52] * FuriousRage (n=Vista@) has joined #Freenet
[14:03] <Tommy[D]> n0ooby, if 'net' is no working command on your box, there is a problem with your windows and not with the script because it only wants to start freenet on a commandline with something like "net start freenet"
[14:08] <n0ooby> maybe I disabled the wrong service? This is a seriously stripped down edition of windows, and I have disabled stuff without knowing exactly what I was doing. I guess I can still run freenet off Linux but it would be fun to have it running on both systems. Do you know exactly what services/apps is the 'net' command dependant on? Tommy[D]
[14:10] <Tommy[D]> eh
[14:10] <n0ooby> yeah, I know...
[14:11] <n0ooby> :P
[14:11] <Tommy[D]> the 'net' command is for starting/stopping services
[14:11] <n0ooby> hm?
[14:11] <Tommy[D]> so it should never be removed, what did you do with your windows copy?
[14:11] <n0ooby> so if I start the freenet service from the services interface in management tools...
[14:11] * n0ooby give it a try
[14:12] <Tommy[D]> that should work too, if you have it :D
[14:12] <n0ooby> yeah
[14:12] <n0ooby> I do
[14:12] <n0ooby> trying
[14:13] <n0ooby> anyway, what I did with windows was to make gaming edition with nlite, then I thought, if it will run freenet while I play without affecting my FPS too much, why not let it run
[14:13] <n0ooby> so I'm trying
[14:14] <n0ooby> now the rpobelm is
[14:14] <n0ooby> problem
[14:14] <n0ooby> that even though the installer exited with 'installation succxessful', there's no freenet service in the services interface
[14:14] * amped0ut (n=target@) has joined #freenet
[14:15] <n0ooby> is it possible to manually start with a command line, and manually add the service?
[14:15] <n0ooby> oh. maybe I got it
[14:15] <n0ooby> I disabled support for multiple users
[14:16] <Tommy[D]> hm, i dont know about adding services in windows, but in the freenet dir should be a file "run.cmd" start in in command line with "run.cmd start"
[14:16] <n0ooby> I need to start freenet as my regular user rather than as 'freenet' user
[14:16] <Tommy[D]> o_O
[14:16] <n0ooby> trying run.cmd start
[14:16] <n0ooby> what? it used to be like that, I heard
[14:17] <Tommy[D]> freenet should be run as a seperate user with as less rights as possible, i hope, your regular user is no Admin?
[14:17] <n0ooby> there's no run.cmd
[14:17] <n0ooby> no it's not
[14:17] <n0ooby> oops
[14:17] <n0ooby> yes
[14:17] <n0ooby> it is
[14:18] <n0ooby> ok, maybe it isnt a good idea to run freenet on this system in the first place
[14:19] <Tommy[D]> i wonder if it is really worth stripping windows xp
[14:20] <n0ooby> yes, for gaming it is
[14:20] <FuriousRage> to get 1-4 fps more
[14:20] <Tommy[D]> should it not give the same result if you just stop those apps and services which are not needed?
[14:20] <n0ooby> and basically, you can strip windows xp by a good 50% without losing functionality. The point is that I stripped it by some 80-85%
[14:20] <n0ooby> well
[14:21] <n0ooby> long story
[14:21] <n0ooby> and off topics
[14:21] * amped0ut (n=target@) Quit (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[14:21] <n0ooby> but you get more than 4 fps more
[14:21] <n0ooby> checking if the users support is still enable-able (?)
[14:22] <Tommy[D]> i would say, set up a normal version or at least a version with basic functionality and freenet should work with it
[14:22] <n0ooby> yes
[14:22] <n0ooby> but as I said, when I made this edition I wan't thinking about freenet, only gaming
[14:23] <Tommy[D]> also, it depends on your bandwith if you play ping-related games, with low bandwith running game+freenet will not give you good pings
[14:24] <n0ooby> BW is OK
[14:24] <n0ooby> higher than most ppl
[14:24] * FuriousRage (n=Vista@) Quit (Nick collision from services.)
[14:24] * FuriousRage (n=Vista@) has joined #Freenet
[14:24] * bwpow (n=miraculu@) Quit ("Prisiel som, videl som, hmmm")
[14:25] <n0ooby> I just checked
[14:25] <n0ooby> I'm afraid I'll have to make and install a new edition, for this one doesn't support multiple users
[14:25] <n0ooby> but otoh
[14:26] <n0ooby> freenet used to run as regular user
[14:26] <n0ooby> and most win regular users are administrators
[14:26] <n0ooby> so, I do I run it as regular user?
[14:27] <n0ooby> is it still possible?
[14:27] * wes^saved (n=wes^save@) has joined #freenet
[14:27] <n0ooby> oh, and by the way
[14:28] <n0ooby> maybe freenet will take up too many resources and I won't be able to run it while gaming anyway
[14:28] <n0ooby> that would bring my up time down by some 50%
[14:28] <n0ooby> say 25%
[14:28] <n0ooby> ok 20%
[14:29] <n0ooby> several hours a day, anyway
[14:29] <n0ooby> is there any webpage, wiki, faq, anything, about how to run freenet as regular user, and start it manually?
[14:33] <n0ooby> oh well
[14:33] <Tommy[D]> freenet is used to run as a seperate user, the install script creates a new restriced user freenet
[14:34] <n0ooby> I'm dumping win-freenet then.
[14:34] <Tommy[D]> no no running with admin rights
[14:34] <n0ooby> I'll run on linux onaly, when not gaming
[14:34] <n0ooby> only
[14:34] <n0ooby> that won't be 24/7 thoughù
[14:34] <Tommy[D]> running as a regular user should be possible with a normal install using the run.cmd script, but not recommended
[14:34] <n0ooby> close anyway
[14:35] <n0ooby> but it would work?
[14:35] <n0ooby> hm...
[14:35] <n0ooby> that would be pretty much like running as root
[14:35] <n0ooby> I don't think I want to do that
[14:35] <Tommy[D]> i have my own install (linux) and there is a run.sh script doing the same as the run.cmd for windows and it does work
[14:36] <n0ooby> what for? some three or four hours/day of uptime? screw that. 20/7 is good anyway
[14:36] <Tommy[D]> but the run.sh script does at least check if the user is root
[14:36] <n0ooby> yeah
[14:36] <Tommy[D]> uptime almost 24/7 except for gaming hours or similar
[14:37] <n0ooby> yeah, but gaming hours sometime is as much as 6-8 hours
[14:37] <n0ooby> sometimes even more
[14:37] <n0ooby> because you have to count both actual gaming and installing, tweaking etc
[14:38] <Tommy[D]> that should be no problem, i use some darknet peers to connect and opennet to have always enough peers, this way it does not harm it that much
[14:38] <n0ooby> that's why I was thinking, maybe I won't be able to run freenet while actually gaming because of resource usage but I could still run it while doing 'collateral' stuff
[14:39] <n0ooby> even running on linux only, I think I can do at least 12-15 hours uptime a day, which is not so bad
[14:39] * FuriousRage (n=Vista@) Quit ("K-lined")
[14:40] <n0ooby> maybe I got it
[14:40] <Tommy[D]> running freenet niced should reduce the resource cost ;)
[14:40] <n0ooby> it it possiblòe to set up a virtual machine that runs under both linux and windows?
[14:41] <n0ooby> is there any cross platform VM
[14:41] <n0ooby> ?
[14:41] <Tommy[D]> hm, should be, also the performance wont be good
[14:41] <n0ooby> well
[14:41] <n0ooby> I have resources
[14:41] <n0ooby> I won't be able to run while gaming anyway
[14:41] <darthmuss> n0ooby: what exactly are you trying to do?
[14:41] <Tommy[D]> i dont know about qemu, but vmware and virtualbox should both have a windows version too
[14:42] <n0ooby> I was thinking most of making use of the time I spend on windows while configuring, tweaking, installing etc
[14:42] <darthmuss> i have a laptop with dualboot freebsd and windows... and vmware to run the other OS under virtualization
[14:42] <n0ooby> does vmware run under both OS's darthmuss ?
[14:42] <darthmuss> so i have access to both OS'es regardless of which one i boot
[14:42] <n0ooby> would the same vmware dist boot under both os's?
[14:42] <darthmuss> old vmware workstation runs under freebsd
[14:43] <n0ooby> disk
[14:43] <darthmuss> under/on
[14:43] <n0ooby> what I'm trying to do is to run the same freenet install under both win/lin, but I have tweaked windows too much and it won't support multiple users, so I was thinking about VM's
[14:44] <n0ooby> the point would be to run freenet under windows while not actually gaming but installing/modifying/etc gaming stuff
[14:45] * jack0815 (n=mode321@) has joined #freenet
[14:45] <n0ooby> maybe installing a kinda-less-tweaked windows woudl simplify the whole thing
[14:47] <Tommy[D]> n0ooby, it should work, if you put the image in some place windows and linux can write to
[14:47] <n0ooby> that's not a problem
[14:47] <n0ooby> ext3 + ext3 driver for windows
[14:48] <n0ooby> I wonder if my way-too-stripped-down windows will support vmware
[14:48] <n0ooby> any free alternative?
[14:48] <n0ooby> to vmware?
[14:49] <n0ooby> vmware is commercial. I will use it if I can't find anything free
[14:50] <Tommy[D]> i dont know if qemu/bochs or similar work with windows, perhaps try some searching with $SEARCHMACHINE ;)
[14:50] <n0ooby> hm
[14:51] <n0ooby> i guess googling 'qemu on windows' will do
[14:55] * FuriousRage (n=Vista@) has joined #Freenet
[15:03] <saces> n0ooby: vmware player is for free, and for many linux distros vmware images are provided.
[15:03] <n0ooby> cool
[15:04] <n0ooby> is it just to go to vmware.com and download it'
[15:04] <n0ooby> ?
[15:04] <n0ooby> I guess I'll try that
[15:04] <n0ooby> not right away because I'm doing other stuff but I will try that setup

[17:44] <n0ooby> if I install freenet in windows, on a dual boot system, download run.sh and the other linix scripts, will freenet run off linux too, provided that both systems can write on that partition? Any special tricks needed to make the same install work under the two systems?
[17:49] * n0ob (n=travis@) Quit ("Now onto something more interesting")
[17:52] <n0ooby> I decided to switch my too-stripped-down windows for a more regular one but if setting up one freenet install to make it work under both system is too difficult, I may reverse my decision and go back to the VM project that I was talking about not long ago
[17:56] <MeanGee> where is the clipboard I need to paste my reference in? Am I supposed to make a note pad doc and save it in mirc?
[17:58] <saces> MeanGee: http://dark-code.bulix.org/
[17:58] <n0ooby> MeanGee: paste on a pastebin and give the address to your would-be-peers. For a pastebin try http://dark-code.bulix.org. I hope I understood the question correctly
[18:00] <Tommy[D]> n0ooby, it should run on linux with that run.sh script as the main part is java
[18:00] <n0ooby> ok
[18:03] <MeanGee> The beginners handbook is saying I need to copy my full link with the ?raw into my clip board. Does this mean I have to paste my reference & link back into paste bin?
[18:04] <n0ooby> MeanGee: yeah. you paste your ref into the pastebin and the resulting address is what you give to ppl who want to peer with you. OTOH, you may want to exchange refs using e-mail, encrypted would be better
[18:05] <n0ooby> actually, using encryoted e-mail is probably unnecessary, as you are connecting to strangers anyway.
[18:06] <n0ooby> another way to do that is to connect to *one* person you actually know and trust, then enable opennet and it'll get peers for you
[18:11] <n0ooby> OK, my bare-bones-with-some-meat-left windows is almost done now. see you guys on frost
